Chen wins gold with stunning dive

That Madam Miaow gets about, doesn’t she? Not only giving us stimulating discussion on the wireless about the Beijing Olympics, while taking time out to win a weightlifting gold, but now striking gold in the diving. And apparently discovering the secret of eternal youth while she’s at it.

Oh, I’m sorry. Our staff informs me that this is in fact 15-year-old Chen Ruolin, looking very serious in this picture, who has won gold in the 10-metre women’s platform to take China’s tally of diving golds to seven. Good for her.

In re: recent debates about teenage girls and their interest in shopping, I have to say I’d a thousand times rather girls talked about shopping and Big Brother all day long, than that they spent that time diving into a pool over and over again. (I write that as somebody who’s spent a lifetime watching and enjoying sport.)

Hey, I like this girl… she looks serious only before diving cos she’s so focused. After that she’s back to a normal 15-year-old. Hope she gets more time to be a normal girl now tho… ūüôā

I read this on the BBC live updates earlier this morning:

Concerning rhythmic gymnastics, my daughter won regional championships in Canada and the US and had a chance to train with an elite team in China. My daughter trained 24 hours a week and attended school for about 34 hours a week. The Chinese girls, aged 10 and up, trained 46 hours a week and attended school for 10 hours a week! No contest.

^ Oh gosh… as much as I admire their determination, I’m worried bout the lil kids over-training and not having enuff time to be well… kids… ūüė¶
