Movementist balderdash and piffle

If, like me, you’re an occasional reader of International Viewpoint, you may have noticed this statement on the Fatah coup in Palestine from the Ligue Communiste Révolutionnaire. I mention this only because it’s as pure an example of Fourth Internationalist flapdoodle as you’ll see anywhere this year. The LCR comrades say:

The LCR condemns the fratricidal confrontations between the Palestinian armed forces… The LCR calls for ending of fratricidal combat.” Well, yeah. Fratricidal combat between the brothers who are bankrolled and armed by the Yanks and Israelis, and those who aren’t. Some brotherhood there.

And we end with the bathetic proclamation that “The LCR demands that the European Union, and in particular of France, intervenes to stop the Israeli aggression, and begins again an honest co-operation with the Palestinian government.” I know it’s a short statement, but it is unclear which Palestinian government they mean – the elected Hamas government, or the Fatah coup government which imperialism has already shown itself more than willing to cooperate with.

The LCR is a serious organisation with serious clout on the international left. Surely it can do better than this.

I’m not sure who the picture is meant to be of but if this is a genuinely representative sample of the LCR membership maybe I’ve been all wrong about Trotskyism.

The LCR are a well-dressed bunch, at least compared to our own left, but that’s Victoria Coren, champion poker player and host of BBC2’s Balderdash and Piffle.

Yes, another media welfare client, daughter of, not doing very well on Balderdash and Piffle but she looks nice in a very BBC2 sort of way and does she know it.

I think it’s the alcohol level rising as the night goes on.

Mine didn’t. As I’m currently suffering from piles (I can think of more pleasant hommages to the great socialist thinker) all that happened was my blood level fell.
